Martha E. Farris' Obituary
Martha E. Farris, 88, of Columbia, Surrendered her soul to Jesus on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Boone Hospital Center. Homegoing services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Second Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Mo. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM Saturday at the church.
Martha E. Farris was born May 20, 1922 in Eolia, Mo. the daughter of Cornelius G.M. Farris Sr. and Blanche Booker Farris . Martha was the oldest of seven children. She was also preceded in death by one sister Mary L. Graham and one brother Cornelius G.M. Farris Jr.
She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. SHe was a longtime and faithful church and Steward Board Member of Bethel AME Church in Carbondale, Il., unitl illness curtailed her activities and caused her relocation to Columbia, MO.
Martha received her Bachelor Degree in Home Economics from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and furthered her studies with a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin. Among her teaching assignments were Vashon HIgh School in St. Louis, Mo., and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. , where she retired.
She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and was involved in numerous community service organizations , including Ivy Leaf Club, Community Human Service and the NAACP. Accolades and accomodations included awards received from: The Black Counsel and Black American Studies Program.
She is survived and loved by two sisters Ophelia V. Mallory of Cedar Rapids, IA., Gail V. Lacy of Dallas, TX., two brothers George T. Farris(Lois) of Columbia, Mo., Issac N. Farris(Christine) of Atlanta, GA., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
