Lucius Warrick's Obituary
Retired Army Corps of Engineers Major, Lucius Warrick 82, formerly of Bunceton, Missouri passed away peacefully at his home in Waynesville, Missouri on Sunday June 16, 2013. Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 26, 2013 at 11:30 am at Soldiers Memorial Chapel in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. The visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 am at the chapel. The burial will be held after the service at Ft. Leonard Wood Veterans Cemetery. All persons attending the funeral service at the Soldiers Memorial Chapel over the age of 18 must provide a photo identification.
Lucius was born March 23, 1931 in Bunceton, Mo. He was the eleventh child, a twin, of fourteen children, born to Harry and Georgia Crump Warrick.
Lucius had a mind-set for education. When the High School in Bunceton, Mo. burned down, and no arrangements were made for the children to attend school the rest of the year, Lucius did not wait, he milked cows at 5:00am every morning to have enough money for transportation to catch the 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mail Hack (mail truck) to go to Sumner High School and back home daily. Finally he was hired at Kemper Military School (Boonville Mo.) which allowed him to live in Boonville and finish High School. After graduating from Sumner High School in 1949, Lucius continued his education at Lincoln University Jefferson City, Mo. He worked at the Capital Hotel for four years to support himself through college. While attending Lincoln University he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Program. Upon graduation he received a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology and a commission as a 2Lt in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1953.
Lucius met his future bride (Florence Lorene Shirley) while in high school. They dated during high school and the four years he attended Lincoln University and were married in Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 4, 1953. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary during August 2011. To this union was born one daughter, Marceda Warrick.
He retired from the U. S. Army in 1973 as a Major, with 20 years of active duty military service; having served three oversees tours in Germany and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded numerous awards and decorations to include the bronze star medal with oak leaf cluster. Upon retirement he taught at Fisk University, and then served as the Public Works Director at his alma matter, Lincoln University before his final job at the Army Engineer School at Fort Leonard Wood, where he worked as a Doctrine Development and Combat Development Analyst until 2003. While there, he received numerous awards and accommodations and attended the Army Management Staff College.
Lucius was an active member of the Lincoln University Alumni Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and a member of the Military Officers Association of America. He was an avid bowler who loved life and people. He was a man of many talents, proficient at upolstering furniture, laying tile, and he built a TV from scratch. His favorite past time was helping his family friends and neighbors.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Florence, his parents, 7 brothers Sylvester, Melvin, Harold, Cleophlus, Charles, Willie and Van Warrick and 4 sisters Helen, Georgia, Fern and his twin sister Lucille. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Marceda Warrick, Van Nuys, CA; sisters Audrey Warrick, Los Angeles, CA; Doris Kenney, Waynesville, MO and sister-in-law Emma Freeman, Boonville, MO. and numerous nephew, nieces, cousins, relatives, and long time friends.
