Walter Raymond Smith, 81, of Columbia, MO. transitioned into eternity on Monday, October 16,2017 at Columbia Healthcare. Services will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 at H.T. May and Son Funeral Home in Columbia at 11:00 AM.with full Military Honors to be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:30-11AM Friday at the funeral home.
Walter Raymond “Smitty” Smith, age 81 of Columbia, Missouri went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Columbia Healthcare. He was born June 23, 1936 in Speed, Missouri to Mamie B. (Williams) Smith and Walter G. Smith. Smitty graduated from Sumner High School in Boonville, MO after which he joined the Army and served at Fort Chaffee Arkansas. Smitty was united in marriage to Helen Christine Smith in 1961 until her death in 2015. He was a member of Russell Chapel CME Church for many years. Smitty leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Stevie Bruce (Myrna) of Boonville, MO and Damon Smith of Columbia, MO; brother, Gerald Winfred Smith (Mary) of Columbia, MO; sister, Lela B. Ransey (John) of Detroit, MI; nephew Gary Agee and niece Chrystal Agee of Dallas, TX; five grandchildren, Brandon (Rachel) Bruce of Buffalo Grove, IL; Bradley Bruce of Nashville, TN; Kayana Cheatum, LaDame Smith, and Demarian Cheatum of Columbia; two great grandchildren; best friend, Mr. Carlos Weable and special sister-in-law, Rev. Dana Carter of Columbia, MO; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Smitty was employed for Chrysler transporting and detailing cars. He was self-employed in the custodial business. He was employed by Sears/Kmart, By George Night Club, G&D Steak House, churches, and many downtown businesses and banks. Smitty enjoyed driving fast, traveling, building/repairing anything that presented itself as a challenge (he could do it all!), and taking daily walks with Mr. Weable collecting coins and sharing their life stories. Smitty loved helping others and his acts of kindness spread throughout Boone County.
Parents, son, brother, and uncle preceded him in death.
