Shirley Jean Broadus 91, of Columbia, MO passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Boone Hospital Center. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbia at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM Sunday at the church. Shirley Jean Broadus, known to everyone as “Mama Shirley,” was born January 30, 1931, to John and Hazel Tatum in Dalton, MO.
Shirley Jean passed away May 14, 2022, at Boone Hospital Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Clayton Broadus (who she married February 2, 1953), both parents: John and Hazel Tatum, seven brothers: Leonard Tatum, Robert Tatum, John Henry Tatum, Fred Tatum, Elbert Tatum, Walter Tatum and Lavern Tatum, Three sisters: Marie Tatum, Myrtle Jackson, Lillian Denton, one great-granddaughter: Jeana Latoya Patrice Washington, and one great-great granddaughter: Briaujanae Jordan.
Shirley Jean graduated from Dalton Vocational High School. She loved to read and write and had the prettiest handwriting. Shirley Jean learned to play the piano, loved to dance, go fishing, and play cards. She was funny and very fashionable.
Shirley Jean was a day worker for various people in Boone County. Later in life she became the main caretaker for Queen Smith, a professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Shirley Jean leaves behind two sons, Roger Clayton Broadus (Shawn) and Rufus Clinton Broadus (Natasha), one brother, Chris Tatum, twenty grandchildren, a host of greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.
