Mary Johnson, 84, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at her home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Faithwalk Ministries in Paris Missouri, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM Saturday at the church.
Mary Alice (Hill) Johnson, 84, of Columbia, MO, entered eternal peace on October 9, 2017. She was at home surrounded by family. Mary Alice was born January 3, 1933 in Hutchison, Kansas, to the late John Wesley and Bessie Lee Pearl (Thompson) Hill.
The oldest of fourteen children, she had seven brothers and six sisters. Mary Alice graduated from Hutcheson High School and then went on to earn a bachelor of science degree from Lincoln University (Art) and William Woods (Education).
Mary Alice was married to Leon Richard “Popeye” Johnson and from this union there were four children: Eleanor, Charles, Bobbie and Carmen. Also known as Ms. J, she was a self-employed business owner of Ms. J’s Art and Crafts Boutique. In her “shop” you would find ceramic dolls she sculptured and created using her grand-children’s pictures, as well as other plaster-craft and ceramic items. You would also find wigs and hair accessary items. Through the years, Mary Alice was also employed as a bar manager, case manager, prison guard, art teacher, art therapist, home-mother to the mentally handicapped, model, office clerk, and foster-grandparent.
She leaves behind five brothers, James “Jimmy” Hill, Kenneth Hill, Lawrence Hill, Harlan Hill, Richard Hill; five sisters, Rosa Lee Johnson, Charlene Deszignes, Kathryn Frazier, Margaret Gardenhire-Mason, and LaVerna Jean McClenndon; one son, Charles Johnson; one daughter Eleanor Maupins; three grandsons, James Johnson, CJ Johnson, Maurice “Donnie” French; eight grand-daughters, , Consuela “Connie” Johnson, Janice Johnson, Nischelle Turner, Yolanda Johnson, Shawna French, Sonya “Sonnie” Johnson, Kelly Levy, Elizabeth “Ellie” Johnson; fourteen great-grandchildren; and seven great great-grandchildren.
Was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, one sister, her husband, her son Bobbie Richard Johnson, her daughter Carmen French, and grandsons DeMarco French and Bobbie Leon Johnson.
