Mrs. Lula Pearl Horrell Williams was born in Columbia, Missouri to the late William Hadley Horrell and Edna Christine Horrell on August 14, 1936. Lula was the oldest daughter of seven children. Brothers William (Bill) and James Sidney preceded her in death.
Lula lived most of her adult life in Columbia, Missouri. She professed her faith and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior at Christian Church but later transferred her membership to Second Missionary Baptist Church.
Lula graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in 1955 and went on to earn her cosmetology license in 1956. Despite living in a small town in mid- Missouri, Lula kept abreast of the latest trends in hair styling and was one of the first black owned beauty salons to introduce straightening perms in Columbia in the early 1960’s. To the black women in Columbia during this time, straightening hair other than with a hot comb and hot curler was revolutionary!
