Lillie Corine Miles' Obituary
Lillie Corine Miles made a peaceful transition to be with our Lord on March 26, 2016 after living with Alzheimer's disease for over 15 years. She was born on June 1, 1918, in Columbia, MO to the parents of Gertrude Smith and Thornton Hueston. She graduated from Douglass High School in Columbia in 1936 and, shortly thereafter, married Harold Miles in 1939, who transitioned to be with God in 1977.
She constantly strived to better herself and those around her. There is no better example of this than when she attended college at the tender age of 50 and graduated with her LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) degree from the Des Moines School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, where she lived much of her adult life.
She was an active and devoted member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia and often attended Sunday School, along with the weekly worship service. Her work as a humanitarian made a difference, although it often went unheralded. She was a foster grandparent. Volunteered for the Food Pantry and other missions at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Miles was a world traveler, having visited The Holy Land in Jerusalem and other parts of the globe. She loved singing and continued to sing up to her transition to be with Jesus. Some of her favorite songs were "Peace in the Valley," The Last Mile of the Way," and "I'm Going Up Yonder".
Mrs. Miles, the near centenarian, leaves behind a sister, Ida L. Lewis of Columbia, nephews and nieces, including nephews, Dr. Jabari Simama (Nisha) and Jarrell Lewis, both of Atlanta, GA., nieces, Charlyn Lewis Dawson (Eddie) of Atlanta, GA. and Jill Lewis of Columbia. Significant to her was also a step daughter, Alice Johnson of Los Angeles, CA and a host of great nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in her transition by husband, two brothers, Harry Hueston and Willie Thornton, and a beloved sister, Catherine Scott, beloved aunts Mary Bailey and Elnora Mitchell. Other extended family members who await her in heaven are: brother in-law and sister in-law Earl and Clara Miles of Columbia, as well as nieces Joan Lewis and Kay Lewis of Jefferson City, MO., nephews Jeffrey Lewis and James Lewis of Columbia, MO, and cousin Joan Blake of Los Angeles.
Funeral Arrangements are being attended to by H.T. May & Son Funeral Home and a funeral service will be held at the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia on Saturday, April 2 at 2pm, preceding by a 30 minute reviewal beginning at 1:30pm.
