Leslie Harland Alleyne Jr., affectionately known to many as “Sonny” and to others as “Les,” was born on June 30, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, to Leslie Harland Alleyne Sr. and Dorothea Callendar Alleyne. He was later blessed to become part of the Phillip Daniels family, gaining a wonderful “step-in” father, two “step-in” brothers Ronald and Norman, and a baby sister, Caroline Daniels Grant. Despite the miles and years apart, he maintained his lifelong commitment to family, looking forward to regular conversations with his beloved brother, Ron.
He attended Saint Augustine’s Church, where he accepted the Lord at an early age. Leslie was a member of Rising Liberty Church in Richmond, Virginia. Upon relocating from Richmond to Columbia, Missouri, he became a devoted member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. He loved the messages of Pastor Williams and the dynamic Wednesday morning Bible studies taught by Reverend Annie Gardner, where he enjoyed sharing family memories as well as discussing topics relevant to today.
In his youth, Leslie participated in school plays, sang in a boys’ choir, and took studio dance lessons. He graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1969. He faithfully served his country for 20 years, retiring in 1989 after spending over half of his service overseas. While stationed in the Philippines, he adopted a baby girl, Elisha.
After retiring from the military, Leslie and his young daughter moved briefly to California before settling in Richmond, Virginia, to be near his mother, sister, and extended family. Heworked for Pinkerton Security and Philip Morris USA following his military service.
In June 1991, he married Lois Ann Snorgrass Martin, expanding his family to include two additional children, Monica Miller and Marcus Martin.
Les had many passions—he loved music, singing, dancing, bowling, and shooting pool. He was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame for achieving a perfect 300 game and sang joyfully in the church choir while living in Virginia.
Les was the kind of man who always said and did what was expected of him. It wasn’t hard to know the real person he was, because no matter what he said—his face told the rest of the story. He was strong, direct, unwavering and firm…with everyone but his wife. He had a hard time telling her no. He was soft, kind, understanding, gentle and loving on the inside. No matter which version you got, it was genuine.
He was preceded in death by his baby brother, father, mother, brother Norman, sister Carolyn, stepfather Phillip Daniels, and numerous cousins.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Lois Alleyne; daughters Elisha Booker (Raymond) and Monica Miller (Bernard) of Columbia, Missouri; son Marcus Martin (LaShaunda) of Little Rock, Arkansas; brother-in-law Christopher Grant; sister-in-law Gwen Benefield; grandchildren Taliyah, Nevaeh, Amari, Brayden, Samantha, Raymond, Kyree (his “playa potna”), Mirajia, Montajia, Cortland, Aydryana, Alexis, Marcus Jr., Arianna, and Macari; and great-grandchildren Aria, Eva, Yahzara, ZaKhai and Kaizen.
