Leona "Peggy" Wayland's Obituary
On Monday, February 13, 2023, Leona “Peggy” Wayland died at University Hospital in Columbia, MO surrounded by her family. She was 78 years old. Services will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Second Baptist Church, Fayette, MO. Visitation will be held from 11AM-1PM at the church.
Leona “Peggy” Wayland was born on August 11,1944 in Fayette, MO to Cordie Paige and Mary Mozzetta Banks. She attended Fayette High School and graduated from Moberly Area Community College where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She worked as a cook at both Keller Memorial Hospital and Central Methodist College.
Leona married Fredrick Earl Wayland on August 14, 1961, and together they raised four children, Vicki, Jaelyn, Maryette, and Dale. Her family was her heart and she cherished them dearly.
Leona was a woman of faith and gave her life to Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a very active member of Second Baptist Church, Fayette, MO and held many offices within the Mount Zion Baptist district. She always had a heart to serve both in the church and in the community. She was affectionately called “Miss Peggy” by many in the community.
Leona loved to dance and shop for new clothes; especially if they were on sale. Her favorite song to dance to was “When A Man Loves A Woman” by Percy Sledge. Helping others was important to her, and she frequently made meals for people, watched children, and lent a helping hand if she could.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents Cordie Page and Mary Mozzetta Banks, her husband, Frederick E. Wayland, two daughters, Vicki and Maryette “Dodie” Wayland, six sisters and three brothers.
Leona leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Jaelyn (Ray) Duncan and one son Frederic Dale (Kimberly) Wayland; both of Fayette, MO, two sisters Gladys P. Roland of Columbia, MO and Helen I. Clay of Des Moines, IA, three granddaughters, Alyshia Wayland of Kansas City, MO, Rachel Wayland of Fayette, MO, and Viola Wayland of Boonville, one grandson Scott Wayland of Boonville, MO, two great granddaughters Autumn Wayland of Boonville, MO, Leondra Wayland of Fayette, MO; and a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
Memorial donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 309 E. Hackberry Street, Fayette, MO 65248.
