Larry Guthrie's Obituary
Larry Dean Guthrie, 66, of Columbia, passed away on Sunday May 25, 2014 at Parkside Manor in Columbia of Alzheimer’s Disease. Friends will be received from 10 to 11 on Friday May 30th at HT May & Son Funeral Home in Columbia. A graveside service will be held at 11 am at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, 1217 Business Loop 70w.
Larry was born on December 9, 1947, in Columbia, the son of Albert and Laura Guthrie, who preceded him in death. Larry was united in marriage for 37 years to Ila Fern Jackson.
After attending Douglas High School, Larry served his country in the United States Army as a sharp-shooter from 1967-1970. He went on to later become the proud sole owner of Guthrie’s Cleaning Service, a commercial janitorial business, for over 20 years.
Larry was a noteworthy athlete and sports enthusiast. His interests were varied, and included politics, world history, music, and cooking. Larry will be fondly remembered for his incomparable work ethic and strong entrepreneurial spirit, as well as his easy laugh, that quietly proud pep in his step, and for making what arguably could be considered the best buttermilk biscuits in the entire free world.
Before his courageous battle with dementia, he battled and defeated throat cancer.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Ila Guthrie, and one brother, William Guthrie of Columbia. He is also survived by his children De-Lisa Hamilton of Aurora, Colorado, Kimberly Wilson, Laura Wilson and Larry Guthrie, Jr. of Columbia, 2 grand-children, Olivia Wilson and Marcus Sias, 5 great grand-children, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
