Judy Ann, Juut and Buckwheat as she was affectionately known as was born in Columbia, MO March 11, 1949, to the late Mary E. Turner “The General” and Roy Turner, and (bio dad) John Purnell. Judy Ann grew up on Cemetery Hill and graduated from Hickman High School “Go Kewpies!”. Judy Ann often talked about growing up on the hill, and she cherished the fact that cemetery hill was a way of life, because all the lifelong lessons and values taught to her brought her a mighty long way. Mom often said back then was a time where family and community meant everything, and it showed. Family and church were a must on the hill, those were the best times and memories of her life as she would often say.
Judy learned the trade of phlebotomy, and mastered it, she worked for the university in the pathology dept for 23 years, they say Judy was the queen of blood drawing because she was one and done, after her retirement from the university she served 13 years with the American Red Cross.
Judy was a lifelong member of St. Luke UMC, where she served in the choir, as a communion stewardess, and was always active in church functions. Judy also served her community as well, serving on the rainbow coalition and several other committees throughout her lifetime. Judy Ann was a powerful god-fearing woman, battling cancer never stopped her from living her best life, the one dream she wanted to fulfill was opening her own boutique, thus Judy Ann's Nubian styles was born and watching her work with such dedication and passion, we knew it was one of the best parts of her life. Family and church, church and family often called “the social worker”, she was gonna give it to you straight, no lies or games just straight up. Judy Ann's sister\cousins can tell you that Judy was true to it all from the cradle, cemetery hill, to the grave Juut was and will always be a real one. Judy Ann was a prayerful and powerful woman, battling cancer for close to forty years, enduring chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries, she always put everyone else above herself often saying God is in control not me, so I have to put in my work here on earth for as long as I can.
