Gertrude Boggess' Obituary
Gertrude Boggess,89, of Sedalia, MO., passed into eternity on Tuesday, November 13,2018, at Sylvia Thompson Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018, at 11 AM at Burns Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Sedalia. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM on Friday at the church.
Gertrude Marie Boggess, eldest daughter of Raymond and Bernice Smith was born March 4, 1929 in Lincoln Nebraska. She attended Capitol Elementary School in Lincoln Nebraska for 3 years and then the family moved to Sedalia, Missouri. She continued her education at Hubbard School in Sedalia. Gertrude was the valedictorian of her high school class. She furthered her education for a year at Lincoln University in Jefferson City Missouri.
She married her husband, Lee Boggess Jr and to this union they had 3 children, Alona (Milton) Reid, Fort Payne, Alabama, Lee (Tina) Boggess III, Sedalia and Sherry (Curtis) Minor, Sacremento, California, she lovingly accepted her stepson Ronald (Faye) Boggess, Kansas City Kansas and a God given son William (Billy) Poindexter, Sedalia.
Gertrude, affectionately known to many as Too-Too, Tootie, Mama Tootie, and Ms. “B” worked at Minniola Nursery, TG&Y, Sedalia Presbyterian Church nursery, Otterville Baptist church nursery, Sedalia 200 School District until she retired, and the Sype’s family home.
She was a faithful member of Sharon Chapel Seventh Day Adventist church here in Sedalia for more than 70 years, As a member she held many positions, Sabbath School Superintendent, Sabbath School teacher for children and adults, Church Treasurer, Deaconess, Pianist, Pathfinder leader, Missionary Volunteer (MV) leader, Vacation Bible School Coordinator, Bible Study hour developer/coordinator, Church Clerk and Kids Choir seamstress.
She was a member of the Lincoln Hubbard Alumni Reunion Committee, the Negro Chorale Ensemble under the direction of the late Kathryn Rayford and she played piano for Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church for a few years.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, 11 grandchildren, Shawn Jackson, Lee Boggess IV, Latoya Prieur, Sabrina Prieur, Katrina Prieur, Cameron Prieur, Perry Joshua Jr, Matthew (Jessica) French, Robert Eric (Rebecca) French, Laveeda (Devan) Canday, and Ron (Jessica) Boggess Jr. 21 great grandchildren, and one nephew, Shannon Rice, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents Raymond and Bernice Smith, her husband Lee Boggess Jr, one daughter Sherry Minor, two sisters, Shirley McNeil and Ramona Bass, one niece Carol Bass Davis and one nephew Lowell Rice.
