Dorothy Anne Slane-Öztürk's Obituary
Dorothy Anne Slane-Öztürk, 67, died Sunday, November 5, at Caring Hearts and Hands in Columbia with family by her side. She was the fifth of seven children of Charles Littleton Slane and Kathleen Warner (Miller) Slane. Born in Portland, Oregon on April 5, 1956, she grew up in Oregon, the Philippines, and Hawaii. During her childhood her family made two trips around the world. Dory attended the International School in Manila and graduated from Kailua High School on Oahu. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Phildadelphia; she received an M.A. in underwater archaeology from TAMU in 1980 and a PhD from Bryn Mawr in Bronze Age archaeology in 1987. She was part of the team that excavated a medieval shipwreck near Bodrum. She taught for the UMaryland extension program for many years both in Adana and in Columbia and for Columbia College and was among the first to offer courses online.
Dory lived in Adana, Turkey from 1985 to 2003. She married Kenan Öztürk in 1987, and they had three children: Çagatayhan, Aybala Warner, and Batuhan. It was due to her determination that all three graduated from US colleges, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. She will be remembered, honored and forever appreciated by her children for the love and safety she always provided, and the time and energy she sacrificed for them. Her absence will be noticed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Dory is survived by her three children, their spouses Alena McClaren and Hannah Dollinger, and two grandchildren, as well as her siblings (Kathleen, Frances [Mike], Frederick [Jean], and Robert) and their children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenan, and by a brother and sister, Charles and Roberta.
At her request there was no funeral. Dory will have a green burial at Sugar Creek Cemetery west of Columbia on Wednesday, November 8. No flowers please. Arrangements are by H. T. May and Sons of Boonville, MO.
