Dorothy Kitchen's Obituary
Dorothy Kitchen, of Sedalia, MO passed into eternity on Friday May 11, 2012 at Bothwell Regional Hospital. Funeral Services will be held Thursday May 17, 2012 at 11 AM at Wards Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Sedalia. Visitation will be from 9-11 Am at the Church.
Dorothy M. Stephenson Moore Kitchen was born December 20, 1913 in Miami, Missouri to Walter and Annie Stephenson. After the death of her mother, Dorothy was adopted by Thomas and Ida Moore. On June 30, 1946 she was married to Virgil L. Kitchen who survives of the home.
Dorothy’s parents wanted her to have a good education, so they moved to Sedalia, Missouri when she was five years old. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1931 and Lincoln University in 1955 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.
Dorothy taught school in Crystal City and New Madrid, Missouri for seven years. She taught 34 years at Hubbard School where she was Principal for many years. After 41 years of teaching, she retired on June 30, 1975.
Dorothy accepted Christ as a young child. At the age of 12 she joined Wards Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for 86 years. She was committed to serving the Lord.
Mrs. Kitchen was a phenomenal woman who lived 98 blessed you and who valued family, education, and community. Mrs. Kitchen was a member of many organizations including: Bothwell Hospital Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, Minneola Nursery Board of Directors, Central District Women’s Missionary Union, Sisterhood, Johnson-Hardiman Missionary Society, Building Fund Treasurer, Josephine Silone Yates Art & Charity Club Treasurer, Helen G. Steele Music Club, Sedalia Retired Teachers, Sedalia Negro Spiritual Choral Ensemble, Church Women United, Red Cross, and many more.
Dorothy is preceded in death by brothers; Harry, Willie, Henry, and George Stephenson, parents and adoptive parents. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Virgil, five nieces including Veverly Williams, Dorothy Harvey, Sharon Kitchen, Barbara Mitchell and Carla Halane, nine nephews including Willie and Kenneth Stephenson, Rodney and Leo Gates, Douglas, Wayne, Milton, Edgar Jr. and Herbert Kitchen, a host of other relatives, former students, teachers, and friends.
