David Luther Alvis “the III,” is known to many as Buzzard and Uncle David; he joined us on March 15, 1948, to David Alvis Jr. and Margaret (Banks) Alvis, and departed this world on Friday, July 31, 2015. As the only boy growing up in a house with four female siblings, David learned the love of family and what it means to be a protector. His love of football began at home as he learned quickly not to mess with his sisters. David’s speed and quickness led to several records set on the track and football field at Fayette High School and Central Methodist University.
Knowing the importance to fight for our freedom, David enlisted in the Army on October 3, 1968 to fight in the Vietnam War; the Marines knew his leadership potential and that is where he finished his 13 month tour. One of his veteran acclaims includes the Navy Accommodation Medal of Valor.
When David returned from War, he started his family with Wanda (Wright) Alvis, with whom he wed before his tour, in Fayette, MO.
Moving to Columbia grew his love of sports. David started his amateur career in softball and football where he made life-long friendships. As a widower, David met Sybil Schumacher in 2006 while revolutionizing tailgating at a MIZZOU football game and married in 2009.
David Alvis III never knew a stranger. If you wanted to have a conversation, sometimes too honest, you could have that with David. He may not remember your name (“Hey guy!”), but he knew everything about you. David has been described as caring, worrisome, ornery, hilarious, lovable, and determined, but he will always be remembered as a friend, uncle, husband, and father.
Over the past few years, David grew to enjoy his spiritual uplift by playing his gospel music loud on Sunday mornings. Once he was filled up and ready for his next journey he would be content to turn it off.
David is survived by his wife Sybil Alvis, his sisters Janice Eubanks, Lealure Tindall, and Sharon Alvis, his children Rhonda (Mitchell) Jackson, Chris (Rozanne Baker) Broemer, and Tim (Shannon) Alvis, his step-children Shannon (Adam) Shafer and Patrick (Lauren) Schumacher, his grandchildren Cedric Alvis, Na’drea Broemer, Tiana Reeves, Nadia Broughton, Aria Baker, Anna Schumacher, Jerica Jackson, Aiden Alvis, Nolan Shafer, Addysen Alvis, Kyah Baker, Charlie Shafer, Marlee Schumacher, Carter Shafer, and McKenna Schumacher, and one great-grandchild Francisco Javier III. He is also survived by a plethora of nieces , nephews and cousins that have not been forenamed. David Alvis III is preceded in death by his grandmother, parents, wife, and twin sister Diana.
“It started with seven and ended with 97.” David Alvis III has been a patriarch for this family, and his reputation will be survived by all the lives he has touched.
