Betty Hughes' Obituary
Betty Hughes, 64, of Columbia, passed on to the other side on Thursday June 26, 2014 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 1, 2014 at 2 pm at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia. The visitation will be held from 12-2 pm at the church.
Hughes was born in Fayette, MO, on June 25, 1950 to the late Richard and Mercedes Gaines. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1968 and studied business for two years at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. She married Leon Hughes on November 1, 1968, and both shared 42 wonderful years of marriage and commitment.
Hughes dedicated a staggering 48 years of service to Boone Hospital Service, where she worked until her untimely passing. Accepting Christ at an early age, Hughes was a prominent member at Second Baptist Church in Columbia, MO for over 40 years, serving as church clerk, deaconess, and played an active role in the Women Missionary Union. Hughes was a beloved member of the Columbia community, and was involved with various amounts of public services toward the betterment of the greater Columbia area.
Hughes is survived by her husband; Leon Hughes, of Columbia, MO; two children: Leslie Lewis and Leonica Hughes-Young of Columbia, MO; two sisters: Mary Orr, of Fayette, MO, and Bertina Markworth, of Warrensburg, MO; two brothers: Richard Gaines, of Columbia, MO, and Darrell Gaines of Fayette, MO; and six grandchildren: Malachi Hughes-Gardner, Loralei Young, Avery Young, Jaydon Young, Jarvis Lewis, and Aubri Young, all of Columbia, MO.
Hughes is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
