Anthony Hickman's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Anthony Jose Hickman
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our loved one.
Jose, beloved brother, cherished friend, avid domino player and all-around good guy passed away May 23, 2025, at the age of 62. Born on December 23, 1962, in Columbia Missouri, Jose was known for his bright smile, his love for music, baseball and pounding his fist when trying to make a point. He was a lifelong resident of Columbia excluding 2 years in the Quad Cites and 3 years in Kansas City.
From an early age, Jose demonstrated a passion for baseball. His proudest moments were to tell people how he demonstrated his skills and love of the game when he went on to play in the 29thLittle League World Series in August of 1975 in South Williamsport Pennsylvania.
From Junior High until his early twenties, he would help his grandfather paint the dorms and facilities of Stephens College along with the water tower that remains to this day in Columbia. You could always tell when he was in the area because you could hear the music bumping a block away from his Chevy Nova or his green Gremlin which drove his grandmother crazy. He would tell people “I’m just like my momma, she was a music connoisseur.”
A graduate of Hickman High School, he then went on to attend University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
He married Jill Ferry in 1989 in his grandparents’ back yard and from that union they were blessed with a beautiful daughter. Amanda. While living in Kansas City he worked as an Assistant Contract Manager for Rent A Center.
Upon his return to Columbia, he went to work for Legend Automotive for several years where he secured the Salesman of the month on multiple occasions. His smooth-talking quick tongue could convince anyone they could drive off that day in the car of their choice. He loved to tell people his name and tell them, “I bet you ain’t never met a nigga named Jose, but I bet you won’t forget me.” You could always catch him slamming them bones on the table and trash talking his dominoes friends.
Jose was a devoted brother who leaves to mourn his Homegoing, his daughter Amanda and 2 grandsons, Amir and Maxwell of Europe. His sisters LaVere Williams, Capucine Wilson (Eddie) of Columbia, Selena Johnson of Florida, Terrie Jalinski (Dennis) of Texas, and Tonya Payton (Wiley) of Kansas City. Brothers Darren Austin, Chip Robinson, Kip Cave of Columbia, Al Robinson (Terri) Jefferson City. Uncles, Henderson (Butch) Hickman of Columbia and William Hickman of California. 6 nieces, 12 nephews, 18 great nieces, 16 great nephews, 8 great great nieces, and 3 great great nephews.
Proceeding him in death is his wife Jill, his mother Pat, his father Alfred, grandparents Clyde and Emma (Mom Mae), and great grandmother Mattie.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2025, at the home of his sister at 1504 Doris Drive, beginning at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you play a game of dominoes occasionally, play some loud music and remember Jose.
Jose’s legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Rest in peace, Jose.
