Joe Coates Jr.

Joe Louis Coates Jr., 58, of Columbia, MO, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at University Hospital in Columbia, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on August 30, 1963, to Joe L. Coates Sr. and Lavona Coates. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1981 and continued his education at Lincoln University and Columbia College. He was married to Sandra R. Coates on September 2, 1983, who preceded him death April 20, 2010, after a loving 26 year marriage. He was married to Reva Coates on August 18, 2018, who survives at the home. Joe worked for the City of Jefferson for several years and was well known as a passionate coach for his five children and as an avid sports fan. Joe is also survived by his five children: Chris Wood and wife Dawn, Laura Grams and husband Frank, Jeff Wood and wife Melissa, Joe L. Coates III and wife Ashley, and Tiffany Coates, as well as his siblings Robin Brandon, Neil Coates, Dan Coates, and wife Angela. He was also a loving grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife Sandy, he was preceded in death by his loving parents Joe L. Coates Sr. and Lavona Coates, his sister Angela Coates and sister-in-law Virginia Coates. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022, at the Second Baptist Church with the Reverend Cornell Sudduth Sr. officiating.
